YANA is a Mental Health and Emotional Support Initiative for Young People, Parents, and Educators, established by the Chartered Institute of Counseling in Nigeria to address the rising mental health needs of teenagers and youth.
At YANA, we believe that no one should ever have to face life’s challenges alone. Our program is a haven for teens and young adults seeking genuine connection, emotional support, and tools to thrive. We work with schools and parents to achieve the desired mental health goals for the young ones.
Whether it’s navigating friendships, family dynamics, identity, or future goals, YANA provides a judgment-free space where stories are shared, healing begins, and hope grows. Our vibrant community reminds every participant that they matter, their voice counts, and their dreams are valid, and according to a recent survey by the WHO, Nigerian children are the most pressured to succeed in the whole world.
Recent research suggests that one in six students aged 5 to 16years is currently experiencing one or more psychological, emotional, or social difficulties, and less than 10% have access to therapeutic help. Unfortunately, students in their teenage years find it difficult to open up about their personal challenges to familiar faces such as teachers and even the school counselor. It is therefore imperative for every success-focused school to be more creative in providing therapeutic help.
Unfortunately, most of these issues are not being attended to due to ignorance and lack of access to competent Mental health counselors.
With this program, we provide access to early identification of psychological, emotional, and social challenges; prevention programs; and various treatment options. We help to develop an integrated, comprehensive program of support and services aimed at:
>> Supporting the school in raising optimally functional children and adolescents.
>> Developing evidence-based programs to provide positive school culture and promote student skills in dealing with bullying and conflicts, solving problems, developing healthy peer relationships, engaging in activities to prevent suicide and substance use, and so on.
>> Developing early intervention services for students in need of additional support to deal with grief, anger, anxiety, sadness, and so on.
> Developing treatment programs and services that address the various mental health needs of students.
>> Developing a school culture in which teachers and other student support staff are trained to recognize the early warning signs of cognitive, behavioral, emotional, and social issues in their students.
>> Developing a referral process to ensure that all students have equal access to services and support.
>> Reducing the rate of dysfunctional families by developing student and family support and resources through training and intervention.
In today’s fast-changing world, schools are not only centers of academic excellence but also safe havens where the emotional well-being of students, teachers, and parents must be nurtured. We understand the unique challenges schools face, such as rising stress levels, peer pressure, anxiety, classroom fatigue, family tensions, and the silent battles that often go unnoticed.
We would be delighted to schedule a meeting to discuss how YANA can be tailored to meet your school’s unique needs. Together, let’s ensure that every student, teacher, and parent in your school knows: You Are Not Alone.
