The Faculty of Substance & Behavioral Addiction Counseling at the Chartered Institute of Counseling in Nigeria (CICN) is committed to developing highly skilled professionals equipped to address the complex realities of substance use disorders, behavioral addictions, and co-occurring mental health challenges. Our mission is to prepare counselors who combine clinical competence with empathy, cultural sensitivity, and a deep understanding of the recovery journey.
Our curriculum blends neuroscience, behavioral psychology, and evidence-based treatment modalities such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), and Relapse Prevention Planning. Students receive comprehensive training in assessment, intervention, rehabilitation, and aftercare support, with an emphasis on ethical practice and multidisciplinary collaboration.
Through supervised practicum placements, case simulations, and experiential learning, students gain hands-on expertise in working with diverse populations, including adolescents, adults, families, and communities impacted by addiction. The program also explores the societal and cultural dynamics that influence substance use and recovery, ensuring graduates can deliver care that is both effective and contextually relevant.
